To deliver a flight-themed regional play space that captures the spirit of the Yarra Valley’s iconic hot air balloons and pushes the boundaries of what play equipment can be.
The hot air balloon structures at Chirnside Urban Park are the first of their kind in Australia and among only a handful in existence globally. Each balloon functions as a self-contained climbing environment — children ascend through the main stem into a fully enclosed spherical rope structure, navigating an internal net system that rewards persistence and physical challenge at every level. The design represents a genuine departure from conventional play conventions, delivering a structure that is spatially complex, physically demanding and deeply connected to the cultural identity of its setting. A considered piece of play design that demonstrates the value of pushing beyond established norms.
